Singapore Airlines was the first operator to put the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus 380 into service in October 2007. The Airbus A380′s upper deck extends along the length of the fuselage with the width of a wide-body aircraft. It has 478 square meters of floor space which is 49% more than the current next largest commercial aircraft, which is the Boeing 747-400. It can fly 15,400 kilometers without stopping for refueling which makes it the longest long haul aircraft in its class. It cruises at 560 mph. it can seat 525 passengers in a three class configuration and an astounding 824 passengers in an all economy configuration.
On October 25 the inaugural flight of the Singapore Airlines A380 took off from Singapore to Sydney. Since then Singapore has expanded its fleet of A380s and its latest new destination is New York via Frankfurt.
Singapore Airlines has exclusive private suites for its first class passengers. Each suite has roller blinds and sliding doors. There is a fully adjustable leather seat and a single or double sized rollout bed. Passengers can get entertained on a crystal clear 23″ high resolution LCD monitor. The service is excellent and passengers are served by the famous ‘Singapore Girl’, who are known for their courtesy.
The business class on Singapore Airlines is in a class of its own. The seats are unbelievably wide measuring 34 inches which is almost a yard! Each seat has direct access to the aisle and the leather covered seats can be folded back into a full bed.
The economy class seats are also extremely comfortable and have been designed to give more knee and leg room to passengers. Singapore Airlines realizes that the A380 is meant for long haul flights and sitting in an uncomfortable position for a long time can be an extremely tiring experience. Each seat has an adjustable leather head rest with side panels, a non intrusive reading light and other features.
Passengers in all three classes can enjoy a wide variety of exclusive entertainment. Passengers can watch the latest Hollywood movies, TV programs and there is a wide choice of CDs. Singapore Airlines boasts a award winning in-flight entertainment system.
The meals served onboard the A380s are an exquisite experience in Chinese and continental food. You can be expected to be served more than one meal on a long haul flight and each meal is carefully selected and prepared. Each meal is served on Givenchy designed tableware. In case you miss a meal the cabin crew will be only too happy to serve it to you when you are fully awake.
Operating an aircraft that seats over 500 passengers on long haul flights is never easy. But Singapore Airlines have made it their business to excel at this. Because of their care for detail and passenger comfort they have the second largest fleet of these huge aircrafts in service with more on order. Flying on the Airbus A380 is an experience in itself, and when you fly with Singapore airlines it becomes a memorable experience.
